Ludovica+Roberto Palomba have a long time partnership with Laufen. When the idea to create a new, collaborative collection with Kartell emerged, it was only natural that these two Multi award-winning designers would become art directors of the project. Ludovica+Roberto
are the most recognised bathroom designers of the moment and have earned the merit of having reinvented the concept of the bathroom.
Ludovica+Roberto Palomba were the creative “joint” between the two brands, able to understand and interpret each specific DNA, translating them into a unique and integrated concept in which both companies recognize themselves. A demanding task that could be achieved only by receptive and of caliber designers such they are.
What do you think? For whatever reason have Kartell and Laufen decided to entrust you with this project?
As privileged interlocutors in the bathroom sector this project was born from a vision we share with the both companies. It came about quite naturally.
What led you to believe in this project and accept the challenge that was offered to you by the companies?
On the one hand, the interesting opportunity to work simultaneously with two market-leading companies. On the other, we were inspired by the prospect to bring a unique vision to life that unites technology and ‘emotion’.
What have you learned from the two companies?
Kartell and Laufen are two companies that are very different from one another. The first one has always been a brand in itself with respect to the iconic power of its products, the other with respect to the architectural value of its collections. Working with both of them at the same time, we learned to allow these different aspects to coexist, to give this interior
design project iconicity.
What have you taught to the two companies?
Our experience in this sector has allowed us to manage this complex challenge in a way that produced a unified vision, not just individual objects.
What has been the most difficult moment of this adventure? The part connected to the bathroom wasn’t new to us. The initial difficulty was to understand how to “interpret” the role of Kartell within the collection and then to try to let all players coexist harmoniously in this project.
What was the easiest and must enjoyable part?
Creating different scenarios and chromatic combinations that are diametrically opposed. It is very rare to be successful in a single collection with so many solutions.
What does the specific KbyL project introduce that is different and innovative compared to the many projects created in the past for the world of the bathroom?
It is the synthesis of everything that can be innovative in the world of the bathroom, on a functional, technological and aesthetic level. The combination of contemporary materials (such as SaphirKeramik) that reduce environmental impact and offer extremely high performance, joined with the iconicity and the charm of Kartell products generates a uniqueness that is itself an innovation. And it is precisely in this direction that we want to keep taking the project.
Who is this project designed for? Who does this new concept for the bathroom wish to attract?
We want to attract a vast public who shares with us the desire to express themselves by playing with the infinite combinations. We have tested a range of options and it will be
great to see which interpretations people give them.
What does the future hold for the Kartell by Laufen bathroom project?
The complements of the collections realised by Kartell are very transversal and can be used in diverse spaces of the home. With this logic we are working on some new products that have a wide range of action, to stress the centrality of the bathroom today.
“An architectural Project that speaks a new language. Innovative, rich in emotion, transparency and colour. The Kartell by Laufen Bathroom is the synthesis of the work we have done in recent years in the world of the bathroom and represents an important step forward in this sector.”
